A novel that is as beautiful and charming as it is devastating and heartbreaking. Yanagihara follows the lives and friendships of four men who meet as college roommates. At 700 pages, there is nothing superficial or surface-level about the exploration of masculinities and the trials of friendship. I do not want to give too much away, because the slow pealing back of layers, and shining light into the darkness of one’s past is what makes this novel so powerful and consuming. I am not ashamed to say that A Little Life made me cry every time I picked it up, and just as often made me smile as I thought about friends who have become family, and the people who have played such an important role in shaping me throughout my life.
