Beginning in 1938, Harvard researchers spent 75 years studying men to determine what traits, behaviors, lifestyle choices, environment factors, etc. lead to a happy life. Spoiler alert: the single most important factor to a happy life is love. But love is impacted by many elements. This exhaustive study provides interesting insight into what makes or breaks a happy life.
Editor’s note: While I have not yet read the full book, I am hopeful that this study does not rest on a lofty, fairy tale version of love; rather I hope that this study characterizes love in similar terms as bell hooks uses in her foundational book on masculinity, The Will To Change (2004); “[w]orking with men who wanted to know love, I have advised them to think of it as a combination of care, commitment, knowledge, responsibility, respect, and trust.”
