Role-reversal is an effective tool in working to understand why an action, behavior, or cultural dynamic is problematic. When it comes to street harassment, Twitter user @ElonJames created the hashtag #DudesGreetingDudes to highlight the absurdity of men who argue that their behavior isn’t sexually motivated, isn’t intended to bother women, and should be taken as a compliment. By asking why men don’t make “complimentary” comments to men on the street about their appearance, that they are looking good, or needing to smile, James not only deconstructs the arguments that street harassment isn’t sexist and violent, but also highlights the underlining homophobia in our culture and constructions of masculinity.
