Our words matter, and being intentional with the message we are trying to convey can have a huge impact on the lessons (intended or not) that we are teaching young folks. Seemingly minor interactions or word choices can have significant impact on a person’s emotional state. Words that encourage dialogue and that are not shaming will support young people to express themselves in healthy ways and foster empathy. Children internalize the world around them and will mirror their parents or other adults with whom they interact with often.
This great infographic from We Are Teachers shows common phrases we may say in haste with a young person, and offers alternatives that less aggressive, encourage dialogue, and foster empathy.
